NASHVILLE, TN—The University of Alabama softball team (53-12) could never find its offense as it managed only three hits in a 4-2 loss to Lipscomb (27-22).
The Bisons wasted no time getting on the board with Jennifer Cannon drawing a two-out bases loaded walk scoring Jessica Wilson for an early 1-0 lead.
Lipscomb added to its lead in the third inning plating three runs, pushing its lead to 4-0.
Staci Ramsey (JR, Houston, Texas) got the Tide going in the top of the fifth inning when she took a 1-1 pitch and sent a line drive over the left field fence for her eighth home run of the season, cutting the Bisons lead to 4-1.
Alabama further cut into the Bisons lead in the top of the seventh when Ashley Courtney (SR, Vero Beach, Fla.) hit a leadoff home run to centerfield making it a 4-2 affair. Dominique Accetturo (JR, Pembroke Pines, Fla.) followed with a walk bringing the tying run to the plate for the Crimson Tide. Dani Woods drew a one-out walk putting runners on first and second for the Tide. However, Katie Johnson (FR, New Braunfels, Texas) struck out looking and Deasy Phillips (SR, Katy, Texas), who was pinch running for Accetturo, was caught stealing at third for a strike out-throw out double play, ending the game.
Jennifer Wright (Brentwood, Tennessee) took the loss allowing four runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings pitched. Her record dropped to 17-5 on the season.
The loss marked the first time all season that Alabama has dropped a game against a team that wasn’t ranked or receiving votes in the Top 25.
The Crimson Tide will start its “second” season on Thursday at the 2005 SEC Tournament in Gainesville, Florida. Alabama will take on Mississippi State in first round action Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET.
