By the time she was four years old, Alabama senior second baseman Leah White was out in the yard with a wiffle ball and bat tossing the ball into the air and trying to hit it.
After wiffle ball, came T-ball, followed by a high school softball career that consisted of a state championship, Offensive Player of the Year awards, and All-state team selections.
She is now enjoying a successful softball career at one of the most competitive schools in the country. “Why has her career been so successful?” one might ask. Her answer, “Work hard every day and the results will come.”
White learned this lesson very young and it has served as a catalyst for all she does, on and off the field.
A model of consistency for the Crimson Tide softball team, she has swiped 11 of 12 bases this season and struck out only 13 times in 111 at-bats. The senior also ranks second on her team in doubles with seven.
However, her consistency is not limited to the softball diamond. She has also been named Academic All-SEC every year of her softball career at the Capstone.
“It’s definitely been hard managing my time between classes and softball,” White said. “I had to learn time management and put my social life on hold.”
White says her Academic All-SEC selection is one of her proudest accomplishments.
“I am really hard on myself about grades. I am really proud that I have been able to succeed on the field and in the classroom.”
Managing a strenuous softball schedule at a Division-1 school and excelling in the classroom has been White’s focus the last four years. To get away and relax, she turns to one of her favorite hobbies, photography.
“Photography is a big hobby for me. I want to come back and take action shots of the team next year after I graduate.”
White says she also enjoys going to the beach and especially enjoyed the team’s recent visit to Hawaii.
Graduating in May with a degree in Interior Design, White says she’s not sure where life will take her. She said she’ll probably move back to Atlanta and pursue a job in interior design. .
“Who knows, I might end up coaching.”
Hopefully she’s still got the wiffle ball and bat. You’ve got to start somewhere!
