Melanie Walls
Assistant Coach
*3rd Year at Alabama (April 14, 2005)
The Alabama program added another integral piece to the staff at the Capstone by bringing a piece of Stephany Smith's past with
her. Melanie Walls, an assistant to Smith during her highly successful eight-year stint as head coach at Middle Tennessee, was the
head coach's first hire in her tenure at Alabama.
Smith, who worked with Walls for five years, wasted no time with the decision, naming Walls to her post only one day after her own
introductory press conference in Tuscaloosa. Walls will begin her 10th season as an assistant coach in 2007-08.
In addition to her on-court coaching responsibilities, Walls serves as the Tide's recruiting coordinator as well as tutoring Alabama's
guard court.
A native of Eatonton, Ga., Walls joined Smith's MTSU staff for the 2000-01 season and helped guide the Lady Raiders to a 99-55
mark during her five-year stint in Murfreesboro, including three postseason appearances (two NCAA/ one WNIT).
She served as the recruiting coordinator the last five seasons and attracted some of the program's top ranked recruiting classes in each of those years.
A four-year record-setting letterwinner at Georgia College & State University, in Milledgeville, Ga., Walls graduated from GC&SU with a bachelor's degree in 1996. She earned her master's degree from GC&SU in 1998 while serving as a graduate assistant with her alma mater.
She began her coaching career with one season at Binghamton (N.Y.) University (1998-99) followed by a year at Indiana (1999-2000) before heading to MTSU.
Walls is married to Marcus Walls, a former MTSU assistant football coach. The couple has two daughters, daughter Brookelyn Laurel (3) and Brylee Ann, who was born on Aug. 10, 2007.
