For the second time this season and the fourth time in her career, University of Alabama senior catcher Ashley Courtney has been named the Southeastern Conference Softball Player of the Week. Courtney earned the award for her performance this past week against Auburn and LSU.
In leading the Crimson Tide to a 5-1 record for the week, the Vero Beach native recorded a .500 batting average (7-14) with two doubles, two triples and a homer. She also scored five runs as well as driving in six.
Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy credits her for stepping up in SEC play.
“I think she is really turning it on at the right time,” Murphy said. “She’s seeing the ball really well right now, and I think she is saving her best for last, her senior year.”
Courtney’s honor marks the third such honor for an Alabama player this season. Stephanie VanBrakle picked up SEC Pitcher of the Week honors on February 14 while Courtney earned her first Player of the Week honor a week later.
Courtney will lead Alabama in a three game series against SEC East rival Florida beginning with a double header Tuesday at 4 p.m. CT.
