Women's Golf Opens Play at Liz Murphey Classic

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Alabama women’s golf team is in 13th-place following an opening round 319 in the 37th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Friday at the UGA Golf Course.
Freshman Emily Sykes, a native of Brisbane, Australia, carded the squad’s low round of the day shooting a 77 on the par 72, 6,288-yard layout. Sykes total left her tied for 28th place in the individual standings.
Senior Megan George also posted a solid round on day one posting a 78 to sit in a tie for 39th position. Others competing for Alabama at the Liz Murphey included junior Audrey Gale 82 (T70th), sophomore Amy Middleton 82 (T70th) and junior Carina Sorensen 88 (91st).
Georgia, the host team of the event, grabbed the lead atop the team competition after shooting a 298 on Friday. LSU is in second at 300 with Tulane and Wake Forest tied for fourth (301) and Auburn (304) rounding out the Top Five. This weekend’s field includes 10 of the 12 teams from the Southeastern Conference with only Florida and Vanderbilt missing from the competition. A trio of individual players carded rounds of even par 72 to share the opening round lead in medallist play.
Competition at the Liz Murphey Classic continues through the weekend with 18 holes slated for both Saturday and Sunday.
