BATON ROUGE, La. – University of Alabama senior golfer Megan George sparked a second round charge on Saturday that saw the Crimson Tide trim 13 strokes off their opening round score at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic.
George, a Plymouth, Minn., native, fired a two-under-par 70 on Saturday to finish the day as the Tide’s low scorer. Her second round score was 10 shots lower than her total on Friday and vaulted her into a tie for 19th place at 150.
The other four golfers competing for the Tide also showed improvement as every Bama golfer posted a round in the 70s on Saturday at the LSU University Club. Junior Audrey Gale shot a 77 on Saturday giving her a two-day score of 158 (T51st). Junior Carina Sorensen (157/ T43rd), sophomore Amy Middleton (158/ T51st) and freshman Emily Sykes (160/ T64th) all carded rounds of 79 on day two.
“We had a much better round today,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “However, if could have even been better had we not given some shots back over the final few holes. It was good to see some things finally click for us on the course. Hopefully we can finish the round a little bit stronger on Sunday and continue to build on our improving play.”
LSU, the host team of the event, continues to lead the team competition after shooting Saturday’s low round of 290. LSU’s total of 586 is 13 shots in front of current runner-up Tulane (599). North Carolina State is third at 604 with College of Charleston (606), Mississippi State (607) and Vanderbilt (607) rounding out the Top Five. Alabama is in 14th-place heading into the final round.
Tournament action at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic concludes on Sunday with a final round of 18 holes.
