It seems almost normal for a freshman to step up early in the season and lead their respective teams to victory here at the Capstone. In basketball it’s Ronald Steele, in baseball it’s Wade LeBlanc, and in softball, it’s Chrissy Owens, who, along with standouts such as Stephanie VanBrakle and Jennifer Wright, has helped put together one of the strongest pitching staffs in the nation. Owens picked up a win in her first collegiate game against Evansville, throwing seven shutout innings, six strikeouts, and allowing only three hits. In her fourteen appearances so far this season, she has posted a 6-1 record with an impressive 1.39 ERA. Tide fans looking for someone to keep Bama among softball’s elite over the next few years should look no further than Miami native Chrissy Owens.
You grew up in a pretty athletic family, is there any friendly competition between you and your family?
“No, there’s no competition, we all do our own thing and support each other.”
How did you deal with the pressures of coming in and seeing immediate action as a freshman pitcher?
“I wasn’t expecting to pitch this much so early in the season, but I think I’m doing well right now.”
When you arrived in Tuscaloosa, what was the first thing that made you realize you weren’t in Miami anymore?
“The people. They were much more welcoming here. Tuscaloosa is very different than Miami.”
What was your favorite thing about living in Miami?
“I liked everything about living in Miami.”
If you could pitch against any one batter, softball or baseball, who would it be and why?
“Mark McGwire. It seems the most challenging considering he hit so many home runs.”
