BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – The University of Alabama women’s golf team posted a final round 334 on Sunday in the Lady Gamecock Classic at the par 72, 5,996-yard USC University Club.
Alabama finished the weekend event with a final score of 1,002. Senior Megan George was the Crimson Tide’s top performer finishing among the Top 20 individuals with a final score of 239 (T-19th). George also carded Bama’s low round of the day on Sunday shooting a 79.
“This was just a disappointing weekend,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “We struggled mentally with our course management decisions. Hopefully, we can learn from this experience and regroup because we have important tournaments the next two weekends.”
Other golfers competing for Alabama on Sunday in the Lady Gamecock included junior Carina Sorensen 81 (241/ 26th), junior Audrey Gale 84 (257/ T-58th) and sophomore Amy Middleton 90 (265/ 61st). UA senior Darby Sligh withdrew from competition on Sunday due to a nagging back injury that kept her out of the Tide line-up during the Fall.
New Mexico captured the team championship in the event recording a three-day score of 930, 10 shots in front of runner-up Furman at 940. Virginia finished third at 942 with host South Carolina and LSU rounding out the Top Five in a tie for fourth at 947.
Furman’s Jenny Suh earned individual medallist honors by three strokes finishing with a tournament total of 224.
The Crimson Tide have a quick turnaround as Bama returns to tournament action this weekend (Mar. 18-20) at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic in Baton Rouge, La. Alabama will play a third straight weekend on Mar. 25-27 at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga.
