Following a successful weekend where the Crimson Tide defeated then 12th ranked Oklahoma and maintained a perfect 11-0 record, Alabama jumped five spots to No. 8 in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25.
"We're excited about the ranking but it's still early in the season," said head coach Patrick Murphy. "We feel like we haven't played a solid game yet this year where we've put together a good hitting performance and a good pitching performance in the same game."
Alabama's climb into the Top 10 marks the first time since March 23, 2004 the Tide has ascended into the Top 10. Bama opened the 2004 season ranked sixth and stayed in the top 10 until March 30th.
Joining the Crimson Tide in the Top 25 from the Southeastern Conference are Tennessee (No. 7), LSU (No. 10), Florida (No. 14) and Georgia (No. 20). South Carolina and Mississippi State are both receiving votes.
"I think the overall conference from top to bottom is better but definitely the top five schools," said Murphy. "Teams one through five in the league have proven they can play with anybody in the country."
Alabama will be in action this weekend when the team hosts the Crimson Classic. The Tide will square off against Maryland at 4:00 followed by a match-up with Penn State at 6:30. Alabama will close out pool play on Saturday at 1:30 against Missouri.
