TUSCALOOSA – The University of Alabama women’s golf team welcomes 13 other squads to town for the UA-Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday at Ol’ Colony Golf Complex.
The two-day event, originally scheduled for three days but shortened because of Hurricane Ivan, begins action at 8:00 a.m. off both the first and tenth tees on Monday.
The 14-team field features six teams from the state of Alabama including the Tide, Birmingham-Southern, UAB, Jacksonville State, Samford and Troy. SEC members Mississippi State and Ole Miss are among the team’s competing at the season-opening event.
The tournament will also serve as a homecoming of sorts, as five of the teams are coached by former Crimson Tide linksters including Alabama’s Betty Palmer, Rachael Short (Middle Tennessee), Velvet Milkman (Murray State), Michele Drinkard (Birmingham-Southern) and Lissa Horton (Belmont).
“We are excited about opening the season and especially at our home course,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer, in her 17th season at the helm of the Crimson Tide. “We have some quality teams in the field and the golf course is in great shape considering a hurricane passed through here just four days ago. We are thrilled to have some of our former golfers bring their teams to town. I want to also say how much we appreciate the support of Ann Rhoads and her commitment to this event.”
Ol’ Colony, the home course for the University of Alabama golf teams, was designed by former UA and PGA standout Jerry Pate. As part of the Crimson Tradition improvement plan, a state-of-the-art practice and lockeroom facility is currently being built just off the course’s practice range.
Tournament action at the Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate is free and open to the public. Alabama is set to begin play on Monday at 9:30 a.m. off of the first tee. Playing for the Tide at the event will be senior Megan George, sophomore Amy Middleton, junior Carina Sorensen and freshmen Emily and Rebecca Sykes with junior Audrey Gale playing as an individual.
