BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – University of Alabama freshman golfer Amy Middleton is tied for fifth at the Lady Gamecock Classic following an opening round 75 on Friday.
Middleton, a native of Citronelle, Ala., carded her lowest opening round of the spring season on the challenging par 72, 5,996-yard layout of the USC University Club. Tide senior Darby Sligh, who is hampered by a sore back, was the only other Bama player to shoot in the 70s finishing with a 78 to sit in a tie for 20th.
“We didn’t play quite as well as we’d like to have played today,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “The scores weren’t very low for anybody in the first round so we are still in the thick of things. We just need to regroup and try to improve on the things we struggled with today. We have to keep adjusting to the difficult greens and the windy conditions. Hopefully we’ll get things turned around in the second round.”
Other golfers competing for Alabama at the event included Mandy Tedder with an 81 (T-43), Carina Sorensen 82 (T-48) and Megan George 82 (T-48).
South Carolina, the host team of the tournament, leads the team competition following their first round 298. The Lady Gamecocks hold a five shot advantage over North Carolina (303). Wake Forest is in third at 309 followed by LSU (311), Furman (312), Texas (313), Florida State (315), ALABAMA & Washington (316), North Carolina State (320) and Texas A&M (322).
UNC’s Ashley Prange owns a one-stroke lead in the individual medallist competition after shooting a one-under-par 71 on Friday.
Tournament action at the Lady Gamecock continues with 18 holes of play on Saturday and Sunday.
