ALABAMA HOSTS SEMO IN WEEKEND SET
For the third consecutive year, the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team will host the Southeast Missouri State (SEMO) Indians here at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The three-game series begins Friday, Mar. 12 at 6:30 pm. The two teams are also scheduled to meet on Saturday, Mar. 13 (4 PM) and Sunday, Mar. 14 (2 PM). This will be the final non-conference weekend series of the year for Alabama. After the SEMO series, Alabama will have only five non-SEC home games remaining on its 2004 slate. The Crimson Tide is coming off its most impressive win of the season following Wednesday's 9-3 win over No. 18 Southern Miss here at the Joe. Alabama hit four home runs en route to snapping USM's eight-game winning streak. SEMO has won three straight games following Wednesday's 7-4 win over St. Louis in Cape Girardeau. The Indians and Crimson Tide are meeting for the third straight year here in Tuscaloosa. The two teams first met at the 2002 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional, with SEMO winning the first game, 7-4. It was Bama's first-ever home loss in NCAA Regional play. Alabama rebounded for a 7-4 win to advance to the title game. Last year, SEMO took game one of a three-game set 8-7 before losing games two and three.
THE RECORDS
Alabama (11-4) is coming off its most impressive win of the season with a 9-3 victory over No. 18 Southern Miss. The Crimson Tide has also won nine straight home games. SE Missouri State (4-5) has won three straight games following a 7-4 win over St. Louis at home on Wednesday afternoon.
THE COACHES
Alabama's Jim Wells is in his 10th season with the Crimson Tide program. He has compiled a 420-180 (.700) record at the helm of the Crimson Tide. Overall, Wells is 612-269 (.695) in 15 seasons at Northwestern State and Alabama. Wells is 3-2 (.600) in his career against the SEMO. SE Missouri State head coach Mark Hogan has compiled a 663-471-3 (.584) record in 22 years as a collegiate coach. In 10 seasons at SEMO, Hogan has compiled a 286-215-1 (.571) overall record.

THE HISTORY OF ALABAMA BASEBALL
The Alabama Crimson Tide will compete in its 111th season of intercollegiate baseball during the 2004 season. Alabama played its very first game on July 1, 1892 at Birmingham's Lakeview Park as coach Shelby Fletcher's team posted a 6-3 win over Sewanee.
*Since then, Alabama has posted a 2,122-1,234-23 (.631) record in 3,379 games.
*In SEC play, Alabama has posted a 756-577-3 (.567) all-time ledger.
*Alabama became the 17th school in NCAA history to record 2,000 wins with a 12-0 win over Winthrop on March 4, 2001.
*Alabama posted its 2,100th all-time win on April 19, 2003 with a 7-3 win at Ole Miss.
*Alabama notched its 750th all-time SEC win on April 13, 2003 with a 4-1 win over Kentucky.
*Sophomore left-hander Brent Carter was the winning pitcher in both milestone wins for the Crimson Tide last season.
*Alabama has also won more SEC Championships (13) than any other school. In addition, UA has also won six SEC Tournament Championships, including five under coach Jim Wells (1995-96-97-99-02).

SE MISSOURI STATE SERIES
Alabama leads the all-time series with SE Missouri State, 3-2. The two teams have met in each of the last three seasons.
*The Crimson Tide and Indians first met in the 2002 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional and split a pair of games. The No. 4 seed Indians knocked off No. 1 seed Alabama, 7-4, in first-round action sending the national No. 5 seed to the loser's bracket on its home field. The loss was also the first-ever by Alabama at home in a NCAA Regional game.
*Alabama bounced back to win a 7-4 decision the next day behind the pitching of Jeffrey Norris. The win propelled Alabama to the championship game against Florida Atlantic. After winning the opener (7-2), the Crimson Tide dropped the if necessary game to Owls, 6-5, ending their hopes of playing in the CWS.
*Alabama took two of three last year from the SE Missouri State. The Indians took an 8-7 come-from-behind win in the series opener on a bitter cold Saturday night, before losing the next two games on Sunday and Monday afternoon. The Friday night opener was postponed due to severe storms in the Tuscaloosa area and the series was rescheduled for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
SCOUTING REPORT: SE Missouri State
The Indians bring a 4-5 record to Tuscaloosa this weekend, including a three-game winning streak. SEMO has beaten Brescia (6-0 and 8-0) and St. Louis (7-4) during the streak.
*Alabama will be the second SEC opponent that SEMO has faced this season. The Indians faced Ole Miss on Mar. 2-3 at Oxford-University Stadium at Swayze Field.
*In addition to Ole Miss and Alabama, SEMO also opened the 2004 season with a three-game set at Oklahoma.
*As a team, SEMO is batting .285 (84-for-295) with four home runs and 43 RBI in nine games. The Indians average 5.3 runs and 9.3 hits per game this season.
*Junior outfielder Eric Horstman leads the club in hitting with a .444 (16-for-36) clip in nine games. He leads the team with nine runs scored and ranks second with seven RBI.
*Junior outfielders Bryan Kurt (.412, 0 HR, 5 RBI) and Frankie Montiel (.357, 0 HR, 5 RBI) have also been solid at the plate this season for the Indians.

*Senior right-hander Bill Clayton (2 G, 1 GS, 0-1, 15.75 ERA) is expected to start on the mound in Friday's series opener. In just four innings this season, Clayton has allowed seven runs and five hits, with six walks and seven strikeouts.
*Junior right-hander Anthony Maupin (4 G, 2 GS, 1-1, 9.00 ERA) will get the start on Saturday opposite Wade LeBlanc. In 10 innings this season, Maupin has allowed 11 runs and 11 hits, with eight walks and eight strikeouts. A native of Milton, Fla., Maupin pitched the last two seasons at Alabama Southern CC.
*Junior right-hander Mike Fitch (4 G, 3 GS, 0-1, 6.23 ERA) will start the series finale on Sunday for the Indians. Fitch leads the staff with 17 innings this season and has allowed 24 hits, 12 earned runs, 11 walks and nine striekouts this season.
*The bullpen is anchored by junior right-handers Brad Smith (5 G, 3-0, 0.00 ERA) and Ryan Forsyth (4 G, 2 GS, 0-1, 9.00 ERA).
*Smith clearly has the best numbers of any pitcher on the staff. In five games this season, Smith has allowed no runs and five hits in 12 innings on the mound, with three walks and 14 strikeouts.

THE JOE
Alabama fans have made Sewell-Thomas Stadium (aka - The Joe) one of zaniest places to watch a college baseball game. Alabama posted the nation's best home record three consecutive years (1997-99), including a school record 37-4 (.902) in 1999. Joe Caruso, an All-American second baseman and fan favorite, added to the lore of the stadium during his four-year career (1994-97) at Alabama. HOME COOKING
Alabama seeks its 29th consecutive home non-conference series win this weekend when they host the SE Missouri State Indians here at the Joe.
*Alabama has never lost a three-game, non-conference home series under coach Jim Wells.
*The Crimson Tide continued its non-conference domination winning its 28th consecutive three-game series at Sewell-Thomas Stadium as it swept a three-game series from the SE Louisiana Lions (Feb. 27-29).
*The winning streak was in jeopardy during the opening weekend of the 2004 season against New Orleans (Feb. 13-15).
*Alabama came within one out of losing its first non-conference home series in the Wells era, before scoring three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a narrow 12-11 win in the series finale against UNO.
*The Crimson Tide led 7-3 before UNO scored seven runs in the seventh to take a 10-7 lead. After closing the gap to 10-9 in the eighth, Alabama gave up a run without a hit in the ninth to fall behind 11-9.
*Bama scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, the final two coming on Zac Welch's hard ground ball that caromed off the shoulder of UNO second baseman Austin Wassermann, allowing pinch-runner Aaron Tennyson to score from third and Allen Rice to score the winning run from second base.
*The last time Alabama lost a three-game series at home to a non-SEC team was to Notre Dame in 1994. After winning the opener 5-2, Bama dropped the next two games (5-4, 10-7) to the Irish.
