TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Alabama women’s golf team is just four shots out of the lead heading into the final round of the N.C. State Saguaro Cactus Classic being held at the Dell Urich Golf Course.
The Crimson Tide, who opened the event with a round of 298, trails only tournament leader and host North Carolina State (294) with the final 18 holes to be played on Tuesday. The event was originally scheduled for three rounds but Monday’s round was cancelled due to rain and lightning in the Tucson area.
Junior Darby Sligh, who is battling back from a back injury, and sophomore Carina Sorensen paced the Alabama squad on the opening day as the pair both finished with rounds of 72 on the par 70, 6,029-yard layout. The Bama duo is currently tied for fourth in the individual competition.
Senior Mandy Tedder carded a round of 76 (T-6th), junior Megan George shot a 78 (T-19th) and freshman Amy Middleton finished with a 79 (T-23rd) to round out the Crimson Tide lineup.
“We had a pretty solid round on a very good golf course,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “We did a lot of things well in the first round. This course is in great condition and it is fun to play at a place that will be hosting an LPGA event and a PGA qualifier. I was very impressed with how well Darby played after struggling with her back. It may be a blessing in disguise for us that the second round got cancelled and gives her another day to rest. I’m hoping we can continue our strong play on Tuesday and make a run for the title.”
North Carolina State leads the eight-team followed by Alabama then Kentucky (305), Arizona State (306), Denver (310), Miami (312) and Georgetown (322). NC State’s Ashlee Duncan posted a one-under-par 69 to lead in the individual medallist field.
Tournament action at the Saguaro Classic concludes on Tuesday with a final round of 18 holes.
