Through constant drizzle and wet conditions, Alabama soccer (6-7, 2-4) dropped a hard-fought, 2-1 match to Mississippi State (5-6-3, 2-3-1) Sunday afternoon.
The winning goal came in the game's 80th minute. Mississippi State's Kristin Peterson redirected Sara Moore's corner kick past Alabama goal-keeper Laura Lowman for the goal and the eventual win.
"My hats off to Mississippi State today," said Alabama head coach Don Staley. "They capitalized on our mistakes and we paid for it."
Alabama appeared to dominate most of the game. However, the Bulldogs took advantage of the opportunities they had to get shots-on-goal. While most of the game was played in the Mississippi State zone, the Bulldogs were only out-shot by the Tide 14-11 and shots-on-goal favored the Tide by only one, 6-5.
Early in the game, Alabama's Jordan O'Banion had a clear look at the goal from five feet out but misfired wide left. Then in the game's closing minutes, Alabama was presented with several chances to tie the game off corner kicks, but Cally Morrill twice sent the ball over the net and out of play.
Alabama was able to break its six-game first half scoreless streak on Sunday. Kylie Boyd scored her fourth goal of the season on an assist from Katie French. The assist from French was her 16 career and it made her Alabama's all-time career assist leader.
Mississippi State came back in the second half to tie the game at 1-1. Fifteen minutes into the second half the Bulldogs' Jessica Davis received a pass from Ngum Suh, 25 yards out and blasted a shot towards the goal. Lowman appeared to be in position to make the save, however, the ball skidded on the wet grass past Lowman and the game was tied.
Alabama entered the day with a chance to move into second place in the SEC's Western Division and improve its stock for the SEC tournament. Instead the loss will keep Alabama with six points in the league and drop it to fourth in the Western Division.
The Tide will return to action next weekend with an all-important road trip to take on LSU and Arkansas.
