TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama tennis teams will host its semiannual tennis Playday this Sunday at the brand new Hillcrest High School tennis courts.
The event serves as a way for everyone in the Tuscaloosa community to meet and learn about tennis from some of the best talent in the area. Women’s tennis coach Jenny Mainz and men’s coach Billy Pate will host the event.
“We are very excited about hosting the play day at Hillcrest High School,” Mainz said. “The purpose in doing this is to reach out to the tennis community and the Tuscaloosa community. We want to generate interest in youth tennis and this is a way for our players to give something back to the community for their support.”
Mainz was named ITA South Region Coach of the Year in 2003 and has taken the Tide to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. Pate, who is entering his second year as head coach of the men’s team, led the Tide to one of the best finishes in school history last season, reaching the round of 16, and the championship site of the NCAA tournament.
The event is open to tennis fans of all ages and skill levels, whether you’re just learning to serve or fine tuning your backhand volley, and begins at 2 p.m. Free food and prizes will be available for all participants.
In addition, both tennis teams will be on the quad from 5-5:45 p.m. before Saturday’s football game versus Kentucky at 6:45 p.m. The Alabama coaches and players encourage you to stop by and visit with them as you make your way to the football game. Their tent will be set up adjacent to the radio pre-game show broadcast location at the crimson village.
