TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - A select group of Crimson Tide legends gathered in Tuscaloosa this weekend for the Crimson Tide Celebrity Golf Classic held at NorthRiver Yacht Club. The fund-raising event helped raise money for Alabama athletics. Led by such notables as Joe Namath, Ozzie Newsome, Johnny Musso and Dwight Stephenson, the weekend's event generated about $150,000 that will be designated to help the Tide's men's and women's golf programs.
"What an exciting weekend," said Athletic Director Mal Moore, who initiated and spearheaded the fund-raising event.
"This was a wonderful opportunity to bring back some of the Crimson Tide's most well-recognized athletes and let them see the exciting things that are happening on our campus. At the same time, the event generated some much needed revenue for the men's and women's golf teams."
Moore said that this weekend's event was "the first of many to follow. With the success we had this past weekend, we certainly intend to host a yearly event of this type. We look forward each year to bringing back an outstanding group of former athletes."
Attending were NFL Hall of Fame members Joe Namath, Ozzie Newsome and Dwight Stephenson; College Football Hall of Famers Lee Roy Jordan, Johnny Musso and Billy Neighbors; former Tide coaches Gene Stallings, Ray Perkins and Wimp Sanderson; Alabama players Richard Todd, Jay Barker, Marty Lyons, Ken Stabler, Barry Krauss, Cornelius Bennett, Bobby Humphrey, Sam Shade, Lemanski Hall and Bob Baumhower and Alabama alumni Rece Davis of ESPN and Jerry Pate, pro golfer and course designer.
About 250 people attended Sunday night's reception in the Scholarship Room at Bryant-Denny Stadium which was followed by live and silent auctions of Alabama, NFL and NBA memorabilia.
Some of the top items were autographed Don Shula Miami Dolphins and Ozzie Newsome Alabama helmets; jerseys autographed by Lee Roy Jordan (Dallas Cowboys), Johnny Musso (Chicago Bears), Bart Starr (Green Bay Packers) and Joe Namath (New York Jets) and a helmet signed by all attending the Crimson Tide Celebrity Golf Classic.
