The Tide playing in its second spring tournament of the year and their first competition in nearly a month got a solid first round performance from sophomore Darby Sligh finishing the day with a round of 75. Sligh, who just a week ago set the course record at the UA Capstone Club, looked to still have the hot hand early on Friday posting a two-under-par 34 on the front nine. She struggled midway through final half of her round but still sits in a tie for 15th-place heading into the second round.
"The course was very wet and soggy today and that kept the scores up for everybody," said UA head coach Betty Palmer. "We need to do a better job of putting the ball in the right spots of the green. Hopefully, we can improve in that area and make a move over the weekend. Darby really had a solid start and I look for her to continue her solid play for us."
In addition to Sligh, other golfers competing for the Crimson Tide at the Lady Gamecock included Carina Sorensen with an 80, Mandy Tedder at 81, Jenny Bouvin 84 and Allison Akin 88.
Wake Forest fired an opening round 296 to take a four shot lead in the team competition. Duke is second at 300 followed by Texas (301) and South Carolina and Auburn (302) rounding out the top five. Alabama is tied for 11th with LSU and Texas A&M.
Tournament action at the Lady Gamecocks continues with 18 holes of play on Saturday and Sunday.
