NEW ORLEANS - University of Alabama sophomore golfer Darby Sligh fired a final round 74 on Tuesday to lead the Crimson Tide and earn the runner-up finish at the Tulane Invitational.
Sligh, a native of North Augusta, S.C., posted a three-round total of 223 at the spring season opener for the Bama women's golf squad. She finished just one shot behind tourney champion Lindsay Hulwick of Tulane (222). It was Sligh's first career top five showing and her solid play helped the Tide to a seventh-place team finish.
"We saw some good things from our team at this tournament," said UA head coach Betty Palmer. "Some of the things were areas we struggled in during the fall. It was a good first tournament and we have some things we can build on. Darby played fantastic and I am very proud of her."
In addition to Sligh's stellar performance, senior Jenny Bouvin shot an 80 en route to posting a 22nd-place finish at 235. Others competing for Alabama at the Tulane Invitational included Anna Strandberg with a 78 (241), Mandy Tedder 86 (248) and Allison Akin 86 (252).
Tulane, the host team, captured the team championship with a 54-hole score of 905 including a final round of 288. First day leader TCU finished second at 922 followed by South Florida (924), Campbell (926), Ole Miss (930), Mississippi State (945), Alabama, Central Florida (976) and New Orleans (1001).
The Tulane Invitational was played at the par 72, 6.075 yard English Turn Golf & Country Club, the site of the PGA Tour's HP (formerly Compaq) Classic played in April.
The Alabama women's golf team will have over a month of practice time before returning to the links for their next event, the Lady Gamecock Classic in Columbia, S.C., on March 14-16.
