The University of Alabama men's basketball team, 2-1 overall, has its first road test this Saturday night. Mark Gottfried takes his Crimson Tide team to Providence, Rhode Island, where Alabama faces 1-0 Providence at home. Just as the Crimson Tide has been dominant in its home arena with a 71-9 home record during the Gottfried era, so, too, are the Friars dominant at home. Providence is 382-151 (.716%) in Dunkin' Donuts Center, site of Saturday night's game.
Tip off is set for 6:30 p.m. CT/7:30 p.m. ET. The game is being televised in the Rhode Island area on Cox 3 cable. Because the basketball game is going head-to-head with Alabama's football game at Hawaii which kicks off at 6:45 p.m. CT, the basketball game will be carried on WRTR, 105.5, in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama leads the series against the Friars 3-1, including last year's 69-61 win by Alabama in Tuscaloosa. This is a series Alabama's head coach has experienced both as a player and a coach. In 1987, Gottfried's senior season at Alabama, the Tide played Providence in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16. That game resulted in Providence's lone series win, a 103-82 victory against the Tide. Providence's win was led by 26 points from Billy Donovan, now head coach of the Florida Gators. Gottfried, Alabama's starting guard, scored 14 points.
The Tide will return from Providence to host Charlotte on Wednesday, December 3 at 8 p.m. CT.
