KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Alabama women's golf team carded an opening round 310 on Sunday and sit in a tie for 13th place at the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championship.
Crimson Tide freshman Amy Middleton led the way on Sunday firing a career-best round of one-over-par 73. Middleton is just three shots behind first round leader Pernilla Lindberg.
"We did a good job with our ball striking but we just made little mistakes that cost us," said UA head coach Betty Palmer. "We have been away from competition for a month so I feel like we spent part of the day knocking off the rust. The last two holes really hurt us today. Hopefully, we can learn from our round today and eliminate are miscues."
Other golfers competing for the Tide at the Mercedes-Benz Championship included Darby Sligh (77), Megan George (80), Mandy Tedder (80) and Carina Sorensen (89).
The Swedish Junior National Team and Oklahoma State shared day one honors after shooting matching rounds of 291. Ohio State and Tulane are tied for third at 296 and Georgia rounds out the top five after posting a 299.
Competition at the Mercedes-Benz continues through Tuesday with 18 holes of play scheduled for each of the next two days at the par 72 golf course.
