Freddie Roach Named Freshman All-America

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Freddie Roach, a redshirt freshman on The University of Alabama's football team, was recently named to the 2002 Scripps/FWAA Freshman All-America Team.
A 13-game starter at middle linebacker in 2002, Freddie was the Tide's sixth-leading tackler with 63 total stops. He had 6 tackles behind the line for 17 yards and one quarterback sack for 4 yards. He forced 2 fumbles, recovered one, had 5 quarterback pressures and returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown against Middle Tennessee State.
He had a career-high 10 stops in his first career start and then had 8 tackles the following week against Oklahoma. Roach had 2 tackles behind the line in back-to-back games against Southern Miss and Arkansas.
Roach, a 6-2, 237-pounder from Killen, Alabama, was the only defensive player from the Southeastern Conference named to the 26-member freshman All-America team. The team consists of 22 offensive and defensive players and 4 specialists. LSU's Andrew Whitworth (OL), Florida's Mike Degory (OL) and Vanderbilt's Greg Johnson (P) were SEC honorees on the offensive unit.
