MOBILE, AL—The University of Alabama women's soccer team found a game opponent in the South Alabama Jaguars and battled a rain-soaked field and on and off showers throughout the match, but came out on the positive end of a 1-0 shutout.
"South Alabama deserves a lot of credit," said Alabama Head Coach Don Staley. "They came out fired up and took it to us. Fortunately for us our defense played a perfect game. Courtney Rogers and Missy Keller came up big for us tonight."
Alabama (4-1) controlled the ball the first five minutes of the match but was unable to generate any scoring threats until just under 20 minutes left in the first half. Cally Morrill took a corner kick for the Tide and put it in front of the far right post. Katie Holtzapfel was there for the header but the shot was corralled by USA keeper Amber Angermier.
Alabama outshot South Alabama (3-3) in the first period and the Tide had two scoring opportunities to the Jags none, but both teams remained scoreless through the first half.
Bama came out with renewed vigor in the second half earning a corner kick at the beginning of the half and then controlling the ball in the South Alabama end when Dawn Nash sent a centering pass in front of the goal that Libby Probst stuck in the back of the net for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 Tide lead.
The win was somewhat of a milestone for Staley as he posted victory number 275.
"I'm only as good as the people around me and the kids that we recruit," said Staley. "I just want to thank them for the commitments they gave me at the programs I've been."
Alabama will return to action on Sunday when the team hosts the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in a 1:00 p.m. match at the University of Alabama soccer complex. The Tide will be looking for a bit of revenge against MTSU as the Blue Raiders dealt the Tide their first loss last season, breaking up a five-game Alabama winning streak.
Crimson Tide soccer fans will get an opportunity to meet the players face-to-face on Saturday prior to the Alabama-North Texas football game. The team will be signing autographs on the quad starting at 4:15 p.m. and ending at 5:00.
