The Crimson Tide showed glimpses of a promising season as it flirted with winning the championship, finishing second among the field of 15 teams at The College of Charleston’s Cleveland Golf Kiawah Island Intercollegiate.
The Tide made a strong showing as four of its five golfers finished among the top 25 individuals, including freshman Clint Provost. Playing in his first collegiate tournament Provost opened his career by shooting three under par, 69, in the first round and followed it by shooting par in the next two rounds. His final score, 213, placed him 14th in the final individual standings. Two Alabama golfers shot their way in to the top ten and a four-under par finish as Nick Rousey (69-70-73/212) and Lars Brovold (69-74-69/212) both finished tied at eighth. And joining the trio in the top 25 was Mac Butler who shot 72-74-71/217 to finish tied at 22nd. Rounding out the Tide’s second place finishing team was Wesley Pate who shot 80-74-73/227 and finished tied at 57th.
The College of Charleston, playing on its home course, won the tournament at seventeen under par, shooting 286-280-281/847. Alabama was second at ten under par, 279-290-285/854. Augusta State was third (856), followed by Brigham Young (857), Maryland (860), Tulsa (866), Baylor (867), LSU (870), South Carolina-Aiken (874), South Alabama (874), Charleston Southern (884), Central Florida (886), Florida State (891), Mississippi State (902) and Kent State (911).
David Ryles of Charleston Southern was the tournament’s medalist. Ryles shot 67-68-68/203 to win it at 13 under par.
