"Coach Dennis Franchione telephoned me at approximately 3:20 p.m. today to inform me that he has accepted the head coaching position at Texas A&M University.

"I have formulated a short list of potential candidates. I feel strongly this hire needs to be an experienced head coach on the college level, and a person who will have a long-term commitment to the University and one who recognizes our potential to compete for championships and honors the tradition of the Crimson Tide."
