WILMINGTON, N.C. - The University of Alabama women's golf team carded a round of 321 on Friday afternoon on the opening day of the Landfall Tradition.
The Tide is in 12th-place at the three-day event being held at the River Landing Country Club on a par 72, 6,067-yard layout. The Landfall marks the final event of Alabama's fall golf schedule.
Freshman Carina Sorensen was Bama's low scorer on the first day finishing with a round of 79. Sophomore Darby Sligh rebounded from a disappointing front nine with a one-under-par 35 on the back nine to shoot an 80. Other golfers competing for the Crimson Tide at the Tradition include Jenny Bouvin (81), Anna Strandberg (81) and Allison Akin (84).
"It was an interesting day but not the result we had hoped for," said UA head coach Betty Palmer. "Our putting really hindered us today. This is a beautiful golf course that sets up well for our team. The greens are soft but we didn't take advantage of that. Our plan for the rest of the tournament is to be more aggressive and take aim at the flags."
Arizona State and Wake Forest are tied atop the team standings after rounds of 298 on Friday. Florida State is in third at 302 with host UNC-Wilmington and Purdue (305) rounding out the top five. Wake's Nuria Clau, the lone player under par on day one finishing at 71, holds a one stroke lead over ASU's Sara Jones.
Tournament action at the Landfall Tradition continues through the weekend with 18 holes of action on Saturday and Sunday.
