Alabama junior Mille Begovic advanced to the semi-finals of the Omni Hotels South Regional with two singles wins in Tuscaloosa on Sunday.
In the first round, Begovic defeated Carolina Ramirez of Auburn 6-0, 6-4. Begovic then won 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 over 38th ranked and 7th seeded Jaime Wong of Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals. Begovic will play in the semi-finals on Monday at 9 a.m. versus Julia Scaringe of Florida. If Begovic wins, she receives a bid to the Omni National Indoors in Dallas, Texas, on November 7-10.
“I told the team this is the first time in six years we have had someone in the semi-finals in singles and the quarterfinals in doubles at this tournament,” UA head coach Jenny Mainz said. “Millie pulled out two great matches today and really stepped up her play.”
Begovic and freshman Robin Stephenson, ranked 39th in doubles, lost 9-7 to Petra Bercik and Carolina Ramirez of Auburn in the quarterfinals of doubles draw “A”. Due to rain singles draw “B”, doubles draw “B” and all consolation rounds will not be played.
“Doubles was a heartbreaker,” Mainz said. “We need to step up and play more aggressively especially on the big points. Auburn stepped up and took it from us.”
“I was very impressed with Millie’s determination and will to win,” Mainz said. “Also, the team is playing better doubles and that was really evident in this tournament.”
The final tournament of the fall for the Crimson Tide will be the SEC Fall Coach’s Classic from November 8-10 in Peach Tree City, Georgia.
