- Title:
- Cross Country Track Assistant Coach
Considered one of the leading sprint, hurdle and jumps authorities in the nation, Scott Roberts is entering his third season as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama. After just two seasons at the Capstone, he has produced several of the best athletes in Alabama school history with 12 top-five All-Time marks including three school records.
In his second season, Roberts had three All-Mideast Region performers as well as a 4x100 meter relay team for the second straight season. He coached Chealsea Taylor and Rachel Robbs to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon as well as Taylor and true freshman Krystle Schade in the high jump. Taylor also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the high jump. Under Roberts[apos] guidance, Schade went on to the USA Junior National Championships where she advanced to the Pan Am Junior Games.
Roberts made an immediate impact to the Crimson Tide in his first season where his athletes delivered four school record performances, one SEC Champion, two All-SEC performers, one All-SEC Freshman performer, three All-Mideast Region performers, a 4x100m team garnering All-Mideast Region honors, and All-American Trish Bartholomew in the 400m dash, both indoors and outdoors where she finished second.
He coached hurdler Talaya Owens to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 400m hurdles, an event she picked up a mere six months earlier. Roberts helped Owens drop over three seconds on her best time in the event in under two months. Roberts also coached former Crimson Tide All-American Trish Bartholomew of Grenada to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the 400m dash while at Alabama.
Roberts[apos] sprinters, hurdlers and multi-event student-athletes rewrote the Iowa State University record books setting 52 school records and personal bests in over 430 separate events.
Prior to his tenure at Iowa State, Roberts coached two Missouri Valley Conference Champions in his one season at Drake University. At The Ohio State University, Roberts worked as a strength and conditioning coach with the Buckeye football program under head coach John Cooper. Roberts[apos] responsibilities included working with such standouts as Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, future All-Pro receivers Joey Galloway and Terry Glenn, #1 overall draft choice Dan [quote]Big Daddy[quote] Wilkinson and numerous other future NFL players on speed and strength development.
Roberts, a Muscatine, Iowa native, graduated in 1991 from Midland Lutheran College with a Bachelor[apos]s degree in Education and Social Science/Coaching. While at Midland Lutheran, he qualified three times for the NAIA Track and Field Championships. He was a member of the sixth place distance medley relay team at the 1990 National Championships earning All-American honors. Roberts set eight school records at Midland Lutheran, including the indoor and outdoor 400m dashes.
