After serving the past two seasons as graduate manager under head coach Nate Oats on the Alabama men’s basketball staff, Derek Rongstad was promoted into the role of director of video services beginning in the 2021-22 season.
In his new position, Rongstad oversees all video aspects for the program and serves an instrumental role when it comes to game preparation by helping the coaching staff implement opponent player and team scouting materials. He also cuts and distributes practice and game footage to help the student-athlete’s performance, among other duties.
During his two seasons as a graduate manager at UA from 2019-21, Rongstad played a pivotal role in helping the Crimson Tide’s run to the 2021 SEC Championships and NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. His duties included assisting the coaching staff with opposing teams’ offensive scouts and defensive postgame clean-ups, while also assisting with recruiting videos and individual workouts, among other duties.
Rongstad had the desire to get into the coaching profession after he played collegiately for four years. He signed with Wisconsin-Milwaukee out of high school and played there from 2014-16 before finishing his career at Wisconsin-Whitewater where he was voted team captain as a junior and senior.
Rongstad, a native of Middleton, Wis., graduated with a degree in economics in 2018 and earned his masters in business administration from Whitewater in 2020. He then went on to earn a masters in sport hospitality from the University of Alabama in May of 2021. He and the former Megan Mueller married in May of 2022.
