The Crimson Tide was held to just two hits in the defeat
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 18 Alabama baseball (36-18, 17-12 SEC) was unable to solve the puzzle that was No. 15 Ole Miss (36-19, 15-14 SEC) starter Taylor Rabe, as the Crimson Tide was topped 9-0 by the Rebels on Friday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
Rabe held the Tide bats to only two hits in the loss, as Jason Torres and Luke Vaughn were responsible for a pair of singles. Vaughn's base-hit in the 6th stood as Alabama's first hit of the night, with the Tide also collecting two walks and two hit-by-pitches.
Zane Adams (6-4) was on the hook for his fourth loss of the season in his 14th start, as the left-hander allowed six hits, five runs and three walks to go with seven strikeouts across his 5.0 innings. Adams allowed a run in the 1st before settling into the game, holding the Rebels scoreless over his next three innings. However, Adams surrendered a pair of home runs in the 5th, leading to four runs. The Crimson Tide deployed Sam Mitchell, Evan Steckmesser, Austin Morris, Connor Lehman and Zach Kittrell out of the bullpen over the game's final four innings, as the relief group combined to allow four runs on five hits and two walks, though the five relievers did manage seven strikeouts, highlighted by Steckmesser's five punchouts.
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"Obviously the story today was Taylor Rabe. I saw his outing against Texas A&M last week. I knew how good he was capable of being. He hadn't consistently done that throughout the year, but golly, that was some real stuff tonight. We've seen some good ones this year. We saw (Dylan) Volantis. We've seen some elite arms. That might be the best effort I've seen in 15 years from a starting pitcher. I mean, it wasn't chase, it was all in the zone, just really elite stuff, and he beat us in the zone tonight. We just couldn't get anything going. We kind of set up a situation before the game got out of hand, needed a two-out hit and couldn't quite get it. But he was the story of the night. Zane (Adams) competed his tail off for us, just made a couple of mistakes and they (Ole Miss) didn't miss them. That was the difference in the game. If you look at it, we punched out a lot tonight, but really so did they. They struck out a whole lot tonight too, but the difference is they ran into a couple homers and a couple walks mixed in there that they capitalized on. You've got to credit Ole Miss for the way they competed today. Now we got a chance to go win the series tomorrow, and we've got to come out ready to go."
How It Happened
- T1 | With one out, Judd Utermark singled through the left side and advanced to third on Tristan Bissetta's double to right field. After the double, Will Furniss' RBI groundout to second base pushed Utermark across home plate. (1-0, Ole Miss)
- T5 | To begin the inning, Owen Paino hit a solo home run. Two batters later, Dom Decker singled through the right side and advanced to second after Bissetta drew a walk. With runners on first and second, Furniss homered to right-center, adding three more runs. (5-0, Ole Miss)
- T8 | With two outs in the inning, Collin Reuter singled to left field. Following the single, Austin Fawley hit a two-run home run to left. (7-0, Ole Miss)
- T9 | Decker singled to left-center to lead off the inning and advanced to second on Utermark's groundout. Decker then advanced on a wild pitch with Bissetta drawing a walk, putting runners on the corners. Furniss then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, sending Decker home. Following the sac fly, Hayden Federico singled to center, pushing Bissetta to third. On a wild pitch, Bissetta then crossed home plate. (9-0, Ole Miss)
