The Crimson Tide defeats the Boilermakers, 10-0, and the Flames, 6-3
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama softball got a pair of wins in its first action of the season at Rhoads Stadium Friday at the Easton Bama Bash, run-ruling Purdue, 10-0, in five innings before overcoming an early deficit to defeat Liberty, 6-3.
An eight-run third inning was the launching pad for a big Alabama (7-0) win over Purdue (5-2) in the first game of the day, ultimately sending 10 runners across the plate in the shutout win. The win was the Crimson Tide's third shutout of the season, its third run-rule victory and the second game scoring double-digit runs. In the second game of the day, Liberty (1-7) held a 3-2 lead before Alabama scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.
Audrey Vandagriff was 3-for-5 on the day with a team-leading three runs scored, batting leadoff to set up Brooke Wells behind her for a team-leading five RBIs on a three-run double against Purdue and a two-run home run against Liberty. Fellow transfer Jena Young had three RBIs, one of which came on her ninth career triple and her first for the Crimson Tide.
In the circle, the freshmen pitchers put together two quality outings. Vic Moten (4-0) held Purdue hitless until the fourth inning, striking out six with just three baserunners allowed. Kaitlyn Pallozi (2-0) got the win in relief vs. Liberty behind 5.1 shutout innings with just three hits allowed.
From Head Coach Patrick Murphy
"It's awesome to be back [at Rhoads Stadium]. It's been a while, but we had a great weather and a great crowd. I really think both of these teams will be in regionals. They'll both keep getting better. Purdue had a pretty great start and Liberty's probably played the toughest schedule in the country right now. Overall, I think it was a great day for us. Our freshmen pitchers gave us some great innings and we continue to get contributions from all over the lineup offensively."
