BATON ROUGE, La. – Alabama softball brought the go-ahead run into scoring position in the top of the seventh Saturday afternoon against LSU but the home team ultimately held off the late rally as the Tigers defeated the Crimson Tide, 2-1, to claim the weekend series.
Alabama (27-15, 4-7 SEC) got out of an early bases-loaded jam with nobody out in the first inning, holding LSU (34-4, 8-3 SEC) to just one run. The pitcher's duel continued from there, as the Crimson Tide broke up the no-hit bid in the top of the fourth and the Tigers brought home a second run in the bottom half of the inning, though Alabama was able to skirt out of another bases-loaded jam and limit the damage to just one run.
Salen Hawkins led off the top of the fifth with an infield single and the Tide went on to load the bases with two out. After a long at-bat, Abby Duchscherer was struck in the helmet with a pitch but headed to first as the hit-by-pitch plated a run. A strikeout looking ended the rally but the score was now 2-1.
The score remained 2-1 heading to the top of the seventh and Lauren Johnson started the frame with a single to right, forcing LSU to turn to its bullpen and game one winner Sydney Berzon in the circle. After a flyout for out number one, an errant throw allowed Johnson and Larissa Preuitt to both move into scoring position and Kali Heivilin drew a walk behind them to load the bases with one out. A strikeout went for out number two and a groundout ended the rally as the Tigers held on for the 2-1 win to take the weekend series.
