The right-hander produced career-highs in strikeouts and innings pitched in the victory
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After surrendering a solo home run to the game's first batter, No. 12 Alabama baseball did not allow another run to cross in Saturday's contest, as the Crimson Tide leveled its weekend series against Mississippi State with a 4-1 victory over the Bulldogs at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Five Alabama arms contributed to the one-run outing, while the Tide offense struck for two runs in both the second and seventh innings to claim the victory. With the result, Alabama is now 29-7 overall and 8-6 in Southeastern Conference play.
Riley Quick (5-1) dazzled in his return to the mound, working a career-long 5.1 innings with six hits, striking out seven men and not issuing a walk. Quick's seven strikeouts were the most by the right-hander in his Alabama career and the second-most strikeouts by an Alabama starting pitcher in SEC play this season. Connor Lehman and Austin Morris combined to pitch a scoreless sixth inning, while Hagan Banks allowed just one hit and walked one batter in his 2.0 innings of action. Carson Ozmer earned his 11th save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth, stranding a pair of Bulldogs with a pop-up to close out the win.
Richie Bonomolo Jr. led the offensive attack, managing a 2-for-3 line that featured a two-run double and a sacrifice fly, totaling three RBI on the afternoon. Jason Torres recorded a pair of singles as part of his 2-for-4 outing, driving in an insurance run in the seventh.
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"Good win. We talk a lot about resilience and toughness all the time and we showed it today. We talked about our mindset going into the game and we wanted to be those things, and the guys just lived it today. I was proud of our response after [Gehrig] Frei's home run. It would've been easy to play the 'here we go again' game but we did the exact opposite. I thought the story of the game was Riley Quick. That's as good as you can throw a baseball. He just executed with his fastball and cutter and landed the secondary stuff to work into advantage counts. Hagan Banks gave us two great innings and Carson Ozmer was just professional there at the end. We did enough offensively but the way those guys threw the baseball was outstanding."
How It Happened
- T1 | A leadoff home run opened the scoring. (1-0, Mississippi State)
- B2 | After Will Hodo and Coleman Mizell each walked to open the inning, Richie Bonomolo Jr. snuck a double into the left field corner to score both men. (2-1, Alabama)
- B7| A leadoff double by Brady Neal and a well-placed bunt single by Jon Young Jr. placed runners on the corners with no outs. Richie Bonomolo Jr. then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Neal. Following Bonomolo Jr., Justin Lebron singled to place runners on first and second with one out. Two batters later, Jason Torres poked a single into left to score Young Jr. (4-1, Alabama)
