The Crimson Tide matched the school record for total blocks in a game (15)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 12/12 Alabama men's basketball team held a 41-39 lead at intermission over No. 1/2 Arizona, however, the top-ranked Wildcats would go on to outscore the Crimson Tide 57-34 over the final 20 minutes to result in a 96-75 victory Saturday night in Legacy Arena.Â
Alabama (7-3) was led by Labaron Philon Jr. (24 points and 10 rebounds) and Latrell Wrightsell Jr. (21 points) who combined to score 45 of the Tide's point total on the night. In addition to Philon collecting his first career double-double, Aiden Sherrell added seven points, eight blocks and five boards in the losing effort.
Behind Sherrell's efforts, the Crimson Tide matched a school record of 15 blocked shots, which was set on Feb. 10, 1996 vs. Georgia.Â
Arizona (9-0) was led offensively by Brayden Burries, with 28 points while Motieju Krivas added 14 points and 14 rebounds in the win.
Head Coach Nate Oats Postgame CommentsÂ
"They are the number one team in the country for a reason. We came out, didn't have a good start and it just progressively got worse. They scored 39 in the entire first half and had 39 in less than 12 minutes to start the second half. So, starting the second half was bad. Obviously, they came out of halftime ready to play and we didn't. It's nearly impossible to win a game whenever your opponent has 28 more field goal attempts than you. If you look, we outshot them from the field and the free throw line, percentage wise. They made one more free throw than we did and got 28 more field goal attempts. You can't win games by giving your opponent 28 more field goal attempts. We lost the rebounds by 20 again which has been a reoccurring issue with us."
"We had two solid wins with St. John's and Illinois but the three elite teams we've played, we've gotten beat on the glass. If you include turnovers, we only turned them over four times and we got turned over 15 times. When you lose the possession game by 30 and your opponent gets 28 more field goal attempts, it's nearly impossible to win a game like that."
