The Crimson Tide earns its first SEC road win since 2022
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Alabama volleyball capped its weekend on the road in convincing fashion, sweeping South Carolina to give the Crimson Tide its first SEC road win since 2022 and its first SEC road sweep since 2021.
The win is Alabama's (10-8, 2-6 SEC) first SEC road victory since defeating Texas A&M in College Station on Nov. 2, 2022. It is also the Tide's first road win over South Carolina (7-11, 1-7 SEC) since Oct. 23, 2021, which was also Alabama's last three-set road victory over an SEC team.
After a back-and-forth start to set one, Alabama started to pull away over South Carolina with a 5-0 run to make it 14-10 and another 8-0 run soon after to push the lead to 23-13, setting up an eventual 25-15 win for the Crimson Tide. Momentum stayed with Alabama to start the second, scoring nine unanswered to open the frame. The Tide made it a double-digit lead again at 13-3 and held on for an 11-point win at 25-14 to make it a 2-0 lead. The first half of set three was a closer battle, with the Gamecocks drawing within one at 17-15 before Alabama started to pull away to lead 23-18. South Carolina wasn't going down quietly, scoring four straight to make it a one-point game but the Tide held off the late push to win, 25-23, and complete the sweep.
FROM HEAD COACH RASHINDA REED
"I've said this before, but I'm just incredibly proud of this team. We make positive strides after every match, we learn lessons and make adjustments. These ladies did that today and are recognizing that we can be a team to be reckoned with. The block was very strong today. There was a lot of problem-solving and strategy between the players today. I'd like to shout out our coaching staff for putting together a great scouting report and our players did a great job of executing the scout in a way to find a lot of success at the net."
