
Alabama’s Clemons, Griz to Compete in Prestigious Amateur Events this Weekend

Dominic Clemons will play for Team Europe in the Bonallack Trophy while Jonathan Griz is set to compete at the Jones Cup Invitational
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama men's golfers Dominic Clemons and Jonathan Griz are set to compete in separate prestigious amateur events this week that will see them facing some of the top amateur golfers in the world.
Clemons will play for Team Europe in the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy which will be held Jan. 8-10 at Al Hamra Golf Club in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The 12th annual event is a biennial amateur golf competition modeled after the Ryder Cup pitting teams representing Europe and the Asia/Pacific continents.
Meanwhile, Griz is set to tee off the Jones Cup Invitational Jan. 9-12 at Ocean Forest Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga. The 21st annual tournament will welcome 84 golfers, including 43 of the top 100 amateurs in the world, to compete in the four-day event.
Team Europe, Bonallack Trophy
- Competed in all four events (12 rounds) and finished the fall season ranked second on the team in stroke average (71.67), average vs. par (+0.92), rounds of par or better (6) and total rounds in the 60s (4)
- Made his Crimson Tide debut claiming medalist honors at the Folds of Honors Collegiate with three rounds in the 60s and finishing with a 9-under par 204 (69-66-69), earning SEC Golfer of the Week honors
- Playing in his first-ever event for the Crimson Tide, Clemons become the first Alabama golfer to win in his debut tournament since freshman Justin Thomas (2011 Carpet Capital Collegiate)
- Claimed the 2024 Scottish Men's Open Championships at Muirfield, claiming a 17-shot victory
- Finish that event with rounds of 68-65-65-62 for a four-day total score of 24-under par 260, defeating 144 amateur golfers from 24 nations around the world
- Competed in the 2024 Amateur Championship (British Amateur) where he finished tied for fifth in stroke play (-1) before moving on to match play
- He finished with a 5-1 record and reached the championship match before falling to Jacob Skov Olesen, 4&3
- Won the 2016 Scottish Boys' Under-14 Open played at Craigielaw – just a few miles down the coast from Muirfield
Jones Cup Invitational
- The Tide's top golfer in the fall, leading the team in stroke average (71.17) and average vs. par (+0.42)
- Also topped Alabama with seven rounds of par or better and five rounds (out of 12) in the 60s
- Collected three top 20 finishes across the fall, including one top 10
- Only golfer to have all rounds played counted towards the team total in each event on the fall season
- Started the season off finishing tied for 7th overall at the Folds of Honor Collegiate with a 2-under 211 (69-68-74), helping the Tide win the team title
- Finished tied for 17th at even par 210 with back-to-back rounds in the 60s (72-69-69) at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational
- Closed play at the Ben Hogan Collegiate tied for 19th overall with a 3-over par 213 (74-70-69)
