Filip Planinsek is the eight player in program history to earn All-America honors in singles
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama's Filip Planinsek was named an ITA All-America honoree after his impressive run to a national crown at the NCAA Singles Championships.
Planinsek is the eighth player in program history to achieve the feat as the UA junior picked up the Tide's 10th overall singles accolade. Planinsek secured his spot as an All-American honoree after advancing to the quarterfinals at the NCAA Singles Championships. He would go on to win Alabama's first-ever NCAA Singles Championship.
The criteria for ITA All-America honors include earning a top 16 seed into the NCAA Singles Championship, advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championship or finishing in the top 20 of the final ITA Singles Rankings. All-America recognition is awarded to doubles teams that earn a top-eight seed into the NCAA Championship, reach the NCAA Championship quarterfinals or finish in the top 10 in the final ITA National Doubles Rankings.
Filip Planinsek, All-American
- Won the NCAA Singles Championships, becoming the first Crimson Tide male or female to win a national title in singles
- Alabama now has eight singles competitors that have recorded 10 All-America accolades as Planinsek becomes the first singles All-American since Mazen Osama's 2018 honor
- His historic run to the national crown included wins over five consecutive top-25 ranked singles players
- During that run, he defeated then-No. 5 Micah Braswell (Texas) his second-best all-time collegiate win with only his victory over No. 1 Ben Shelton (Florida) in 2022 surpassing the feat
- Planinsek also topped No. 17 Cannon Kingsley (Ohio State) in the Round of 32, No. 15 Cooper Williams (Harvard) in the quarterfinals, No. 9 Ozan Baris (Michigan State) in the semifinals and No. 23 Michael Zheng (Columbia) in the finals in addition to topping No. 118 Jonas Hartenstein (North Florida) in the opening match
- Planinsek was just the second player in program history to reach the quarterfinals at the NCAA Singles Tournament and the first to advance to the semifinal round
- He concluded the season with a 27-13 overall singles recorded and finished the season on seven match winning streak
- The junior held a national ranking in 19 consecutive ITA singles polls, dating back to March 21, 2023
