Alabama Opens Play at the 2024 SEC Men’s Golf Championship Wednesday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 9 Alabama men's golf team is set to begin postseason play when it competes at the 2024 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championship this week. The event will take place Wednesday through Sunday, April 24-28, in St. Simons Island, Ga., at the par 70, 7,005-yard Sea Island Golf Club.
Jones Free will lead off championship play for Alabama when he tees off in the first of three rounds of stroke play Wednesday morning on hole No. 10 at 7:20 a.m. CT.
All 14 SEC schools will compete in a 54-hole, stroke-play format, which includes 18 holes Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Eight teams will advance to the match-play quarterfinals Saturday morning, while four teams will move on to the match-play semifinals Saturday afternoon. The final two teams will go head-to-head in the match-play finals on Sunday.
The Lineup
- The Crimson Tide heads into postseason play with the same lineup as the last four events of the regular spring season where they collected three top-5 team finishes
- Canon Claycomb (71.38, -0.12) and Thomas Ponder (71.27, -0.23) lead the squad both averaging under 72.00 strokes per round and scoring in the negative in average vs. par for the year
- Jonathan Griz, who recently came off a first place finish at the Linger Longer, ranks third in stroke average (72.09)
- JP Cave (72.46) and Jones Free (72.57) round out the Tide's starting five in the event, respectively
- Austin Coggin will also serve as the alternate golfer this year with a season average of 72.95 strokes and +1.10 average vs. par
Tournament Preview
- The 2024 SEC Championship welcomes the nation's top golfers with nine of the 14 teams ranked in the top-25, including seven inside the top-20 and five in the top-10
- No. 1 Auburn leads the field with No. 2 Vanderbilt, No.5 Ole Miss, No. 7 Tennessee, No. 9 Alabama, No. 11 Arkansas and No. 15 Florida rounding out the top 20
- No. 22 Texas A&M, No. 23 Georgia, No. 35 LSU, No. 37 Missouri and No. 38 Mississippi State inside the top 40, with South Carolina and Kentucky rounding out the 14-team field
- The team championship will be awarded to the winners of match play, while the individual medalist and runner up will be awarded based on stroke play
