The Blazers evened the season series up with the win
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball fell to UAB, 5-2, on Tuesday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The midweek result moved the 12th-ranked Crimson Tide 24-13 overall.
The Blazers scored out of the gate, plating a pair in the first. Alabama answered with solo homers from Gage Miller and Justin Lebron to knot it up at 2-2 after one full. Both teams would remain scoreless until the fifth when UAB plated two more before adding an insurance run in the eighth for the 5-2 advantage, the eventual final.
Collin Patterson (2-1) picked up the win for the Blazers with 3.0 scoreless relief frames while John Luke Martin earned his first save of the year, working the final 2.0 innings. The loss went to Jansen Kenty (0-1).
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"The focus clearly wasn't good enough at the beginning of the game. I don't think it was an energy or lackadaisical thing, but our focus just clearly wasn't good enough on the defensive end tonight. We responded quick, which was great, but as soon as (UAB) went to the bullpen they stymied us all day."
How It Happened
- T1 | With the bases loaded and one down, a sacrifice fly followed by a fielder's choice scored a pair for the Blazers. (2-0, UAB)
- B1 | Gage Miller led off with a solo home run. One batter later, Justin Lebron followed suit with a solo homer of his own. (2-2)
- T5 | A solo home run from Brayton Brown put the Blazers in front. After a walk and a double put two in scoring position, a wild pitch brought in another tally to widen the gap. (4-2, UAB)
- T8 | The Blazers added one more, using a leadoff triple followed by a sacrifice fly to plate the run. (5-2, UAB)
Postgame Notes
- The Crimson Tide has homered in 25 games on the season, including 18 games with two-or-more roundtrippers.
- Gage Miller led off the game with a solo homer. It was his fourth home run to start a game this season and first since March 23 in game two of the doubleheader at Georgia.
- Miller has reached base safely in all 36 games that he has played in. That is believed to be the longest reached base streak to start a season other than Jeremy Brown's program-record 50 games to open the 2001 campaign.
- The junior's 36-game streak is also believed to be the fourth-longest reached base streak in program history. It trails only Taylor Dugas' 46-game (2011-12) and 47-game (March 14-May 29, 2010) streaks along with Brown's program record of 50 games.
