TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – As the clock hit 0:00, Alabama women's basketball head coach Kristy Curry face lit up as her team just came from behind to defeat Vanderbilt, 74-66, on February 5, 2024.The comeback win was just a fraction of the celebration because Coach Curry, in her 25th season, secured her 500th career win.
"It's not about me," said Curry. "I'm just so happy our team won tonight. One thing in our program that we talk about a lot is grit. You can be the hardest worker in the room and the most competitive in the room, and I thought we were just that. The way we won tonight says a lot about this team."
Although Curry was focused on the team's grittiness during the win, her players and staff made sure to wrap their head coach in hugs and shared high-fives with "congratulations" and a locker room water bottle shower to celebrate Curry's accomplishment.
For the last 11 seasons Curry has been at the helm of the women's basketball program where Alabama currently has won 191 games during her tenure. Curry is one of 10 coaches in women's basketball history to have 100-plus wins at three different schools. In four of her 10 seasons, Curry has led her team to 20 or more wins, including two in the past three years. Curry has compiled a 191-149 (.561) regular season record at the Capstone, while leading the Tide to six postseason appearances that includes four trips to the NCAA Tournament in two of the last three seasons. Â
Curry began her head coaching career in April of 1999 at Purdue where she spent seven years with the Boilermakers. While there, Curry compiled a record of 179-51 (.778) and was 86-26 (.768) in Big Ten Conference games. Those results included two conference regular-season (2001, 2002) and three Big Ten Tournament (2000, 2003 and 2004) championships. She also guided her teams to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2001 NCAA championship game and a Final Four appearance. Curry became only the second coach in NCAA history to guide her team to the NCAA championship game in her second year as a head coach.
Curry became one of the most established and successful head coaches in Purdue history before taking over the reins at Texas Tech on March 30, 2006. She spent seven years with the Lady Raider basketball program where she compiled a record of 130-98 (.570) and guided the Lady Raiders to a 21-11 record in 2012-13 and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years.
