
Wiseman’s 100 Breaststroke Silver Medal Leads Alabama on Fifth Day of SEC Championships

Wiseman podiumed in the 100 breaststroke for the third consecutive year as she posted a second-place finish in the event
AUBURN, Ala. – Avery Wiseman's second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke paced the Alabama swimming and diving team on the fifth day of competition at the Southeastern Conference Championships.
Wiseman clocked a time of 58.08 to earn a silver medal and record a podium finish in the 100 breaststroke for the third consecutive season. The silver medal was a career best for Wiseman who earned bronze during the 2022 and 2023 championships.
Wiseman followed the silver-medal performance with a fourth-place finish with the 400 medley relay team. The team of Ella Menear, Wiseman, Gaby Van Brunt and Diana Petkova reached the wall with a season-best time of 3:31.14, an A standard cut in the event.
Trey Sheils reached the A final in the 100 breaststroke after tying his career-best swim with a 52.42. He would go 53.10 in the finals to finish eighth overall in the event.
The men's 400 medley relay team closed Friday night's competition with an eighth-place finish as Tommy Hagar, Michael Deans, Bernardo Bondra de Almeida and Zarek Wilson combined to go 3:07.49.
The Crimson Tide is in sixth place in the women's competition with a score of 473, while the men's team ranks eighth with a score of 366.
The Meet
- Ella Menear moved to second on UA's all-time top-10 list in the 100 backstroke as the freshman bettered her career-best time in the event twice during the day and knocked over half a second off her entry time
- Menear swam a time of 52.15 during the B finals to finish third in the heat and 11th overall after originally going 52.54 during the prelims
- Michael Deans earned a spot on UA's all-time list as he posted a career-best time in the 100 breaststroke twice during the day's events, recording his best swim at 52.47 in the finals to rank seventh in program history
- Deans would secure an 11th-place finish overall in the 100 breaststroke
- With a time of 1:44.28, Tommy Hagar captured the fifth-fastest time in the B final to place 13th overall in the 200 butterfly
- Hagar finished the morning session with a career-best time as his 1:44.09 placed him eighth all-time in Alabama history
- In addition to Wiseman, the Crimson Tide had four females advance to the night session in the 100 breaststroke as Diana Petkova, Kasia Norman and Jocelyn Fisher reached the B final and Sophia Garrison qualified for the C final
- Petkova posted a time of 59.71 to finish 10th in the event, while Norman's 1:00.00 placed her 11th and Fisher's 1:00.22 placed her 14th
- Garrison rounded out the competition with a time of 1:00.92 to place 18th overall in the meet
- Eric Stelmar posted a season-best time of 46.28 in the 100 backstroke to finish 18th, while Brendan Connors went 47.21 in the finals to finish 24th
- Connors' preliminary time of 46.89 moved him to ninth all-time on UA's top-10 list and earned him a spot in the finals
- All three UA divers scored points for the Tide on the platform as Peter Edin (243.15) placed 20th, Paul Mathews (224.85) placed 23rd and Colten Cryer (221.95) placed 24th

- The final day of competition will get underway at 9:30 a.m. CT with the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 200 breaststroke
- Women's platform diving will begin at 11:30 a.m., while the opening heats for the mile will start at 2:30 p.m.
- The finals night session will begin at 5:30 p.m.
