No. 18 Alabama Defeats Rice, Leads Princeton on Opening Day of the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic

The Crimson Tide recorded a 4-1 victory against Rice in the opening round and is leading Princeton 1-0 in the semifinals, which will conclude on Saturday
MONTGOMERY, Ala. –– The No. 18 Alabama men's tennis team (9-4) captured a 4-1 victory over Rice Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic. Additionally, UA holds a 1-0 advantage in its second-round match against Princeton, which will conclude the singles portion of the competition on Saturday.
Alabama used four singles victories to capture the win in the opening round of competition and advance to the semifinals. Matic Dimic, Andrii Zimnokh, Matias Ponce De Leon and Filip Planinsek all tallied a point for the Tide in the win.
Match Notes – Rice
- Rice claimed the first point of the day with wins at the No. 2 and No. 1 doubles spots
- Dimic evened the score with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kabeer Kapasi on court six, before Andrii Zimnokh gave UA the lead with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Emir Sendogan on court four
- Matias Ponce De Leon posted a straight set, 6-2, 6-3 decision against Arthus de la Bassetiere for match point
- After taking a first-set tiebreaker 7-1, Filip Planinsek downed Yasha Zemel 6-2 in the second set for the overall team win

- The Crimson Tide took an early lead over the Princeton Tigers, securing the doubles point in a match that will be split between Friday and Saturday
- Aguiard and Foster took an impressive 6-2 win over Paul Inchauspe and Filippos Astreinidis on court one
- Princeton evened the attempt for the doubles point with a victory on court three, but Planinsek and Zimnokh emerged victorious in a tiebreaker on court two
- The UA duo secured a 7-5 victory in the tiebreaker to give Alabama the advantage heading into Saturday's singles
