The Alabama junior paced the Crimson Tide at the ITA National Indoor Championships, recording a pair of singles and doubles victories against some of the nation’s top-ranked players
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ––Alabama men's tennis player Filip Planinsek earned his first Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honor this season, after capturing a pair of singles and doubles victories at the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Planinsek's performance at the national indoor championships led then-No. 21 Alabama to an upset win over the then-No. 5 Southern California Trojans and a narrow 4-2 loss to the top-ranked team in the country, Ohio State.
Match Notes
- Went undefeated at the ITA National Indoor Championships, recording a pair of singles and doubles victories
- Upset the No. 35 doubles pairing in the country, Robert Cash and Bryce Nakashima from Ohio State with a 7-5 victory in addition to defeating Karl Kazuma Lee and Oscar Weightman from Southern California with a 6-4 decision
- Defeated three-time All-American and No. 67 Connor Kingsley 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5) in singles, who took the fall season off to play on the professional circuit after finishing 12th nationally last season
- Both sets against Kingsley went into a tiebreaker
- Also upset No. 38 Peter Makk from Southern California with a 6-3, 6-4 victory
- Went into a third set against No. 15 Michael Zheng (Columbia), but the match was unfinished as Planinsek trailed 2-6, 6-3, 1-2
- Also competed in a tiebreaker against No. 24 Nicolas Kotzen and Max Westphal from Columbia, but the point was clinched with both teams tied at 5-5 in the tiebreaker
