Mathews Highlights Alabama on Opening Day of SEC Championships

The Crimson Tide freshman finished 15th overall and seventh in the B final on the 1m board
AUBURN, Ala. – Paul Mathews highlighted the Alabama swimming and diving team on the opening day of the Southeastern Conference Championships, reaching the B final on the 1m board. Mathews scored a 287.65 in the finals to place seventh in the consolation round and 15th overall.
Mathews concluded the B final by scoring a 50 or higher on his last four dives, highlighted by a 60.00 in the third round.
After the first event, the Crimson Tide finished the night in eighth place with 18 points.
The Meet
- The Crimson Tide had three student-athletes competing in the lone event of the day, the men's 1m dive
- Mathews finished 16th in the preliminary round with a score of 281.30 to advance to the B finals
- After falling to 24th in the second round of prelims, Mathews recorded a 61.50 score on a reverse 2-1/2 somersault tuck to advance him into the top 16
- Additionally, Colten Cryer scored points for the Tide, finishing the day in 19th place with a score of 268.10
- Peter Edin rounded out the event for Alabama with a 27th-place finish and a score of 247.40

- UA will return to action on Tuesday with the women's 3m diving beginning at 11 a.m. CT
- The swimming competition will get underway during the night session at 5 p.m. CT
- The night session will feature both the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay, in addition to the A finals of the women's 3m dive
