
CONCACAF Gold Cup

The Alabama soccer team will have one current and two former student-athletes compete in the CONCACAF Gold Cup as freshman forward Kennedy Garcia represents Puerto Rico and alums Riley Tanner and Reyna Reyas will play for Panama and Mexico, respectively.
The Tournament will feature 15 teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean.
Fans can stream the matches on CBS and Paramount+.

Mexico is off to the semifinals after capturing a 3-2 victory over Paraguay on Sunday as a brace from Jacqueline Ovalle highlighted the match. Ovalle scored the first goal of the day in the 31st minute as Karen Luna gave Mexico a 2-0 lead with her goal in the 49th minute. Reyes entered the pitch in the 59th minute, moving to left back. Paraguay found its first goal in the 64th from Camila Barbosa, however Ovalle tallied her second goal of the day in the 69th minute to make the score 3-1. Paraguay would add one more goal before the final whistle as Rebeca Fernandez scored at the 72 minute mark.Â
Wednesday, Feb. 28
After the conclusion of Group Play, Kennedy Garcia and Puerto Rico tied with Costa Rico as the second-best third-place finisher. The two teams tied in every deciding category, resulting in the tournament having to draw the advancing team. Costa Rico won the draw and earned a spot in the quarterfinals as Puerto Rico's time in the tournament came to an end.Â

Tuesday, Feb. 27
Riley Tanner (Panama) and Kennedy Garcia (Puerto Rico) concluded Group Play on Tuesday. Once again, Garcia entered the pitch at the start of the second half. However, she was unable to help Puerto Rico in its 2-0 loss to Columbia. Tanner earned the start for Panama in its 5-0 loss to Brazil. Brazil would take the Group B victory after defeating Columbia 1-0 earlier in the tournament. The loss to Brazil would conclude Panama's time at the Gold Cup, while the final round of matches on Wednesday determines whether Puerto Rico advances to the quarterfinals.Â
Monday, Feb. 26
Mexico captured a historic win over the United States scoring a pair of goals to upset the U.S. and claim the top spot in the group. It was the first win for Mexico against the U.S. since 2010, snapping a 16-game winning streak. The two goals also ended a 33-game streak in which the U.S. had kept a clean sheet in Concacaf competition. Mexico advances to the quarterfinals and will await its opponent for the next round of competition.Â
Saturday, Feb. 24
Riley Tanner (Panama) and Kennedy Garcia (Puerto Rico) met for the first time on the field as Panama and Puerto Rico battled in the second round of Group Play. Tanner earned the start for Panama. She would play the whole 90 minutes, tallying a shot on goal before the final whistle but the attempt was saved. Garcia's substitution at halftime proved to be the difference in the game as the UA freshman assisted the game-winning goal in the 2-1 victory.
Panama found a goal in the 27th minute to take the early lead. It would take Puerto Rico until the 73rd minute to even the match. In the third minute of stoppage time, Garcia threaded a ball through at the top of the box for teammate Danielle Julia Marcano to run onto and score.Â

Friday, Feb. 23
Mexico captured a dominant 8-0 victory against the Dominican Republic in the second round of Group Play. Reyna Reyes entered the contest as a second-half substitute and played the full 45 minutes. She tallied her first shot of the tournament in the 90th minute of the game as the attempt fell just wide of goal, in addition to being credited with two steals. Reyes will close Group Play on Monday against the United States.Â
Wednesday, Feb. 21
Riley Tanner and Panama fell 6-0 to Columbia on Wednesday. Tanner entered the match in the 46th minute as Panama trailed 3-0 after 45 minutes of action. Manuela Pavi paced the game with a brace in the opening 35 minutes.
After advancing with a 1-0 victory against Haiti, Puerto Rico went head-to-head with Brazil on Wednesday to open Group Play. Puerto Rico held Brazil off the scoreboard for 86 minutes of action but a goal from Gabi Nunes in the 81st minute gave Brazil the 1-0 victory. Puerto Rico will face Panama in the second round of group play on Friday.Â
Tuesday, Feb. 20
The Mexican national team battled Argentina in a scoreless, 0-0, draw on Tuesday in the opening round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Reyna Reyes and Mexico will face the Dominican Republic in its second match on Friday.
Saturday, Feb. 17
Kennedy Garcia and Puerto Rico captured a 1-0 victory over Haiti to earn a spot in Group Play. Puerto Rico's Jillienne Aguilera found the back of the net in the 41st minute off a penalty kick. Garcia made her tournament debut in the 76th minute. The team will face Brazil on Wednesday at 9:15 p.m. CT.Â
