The Crimson Tide’s distance contingent all clocked a top-10 UA time as Lemngole highlighted the day by breaking the women’s 5,000-meter collegiate record
BOSTON – Seven Alabama track and field distance runners kickstarted the 2024-25 indoor season Saturday at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, as star sophomore Doris Lemngole highlighted the day by breaking the collegiate record (14:52.57) in the women's 5,000m, effectively knocking 0.22 seconds off the previous national record.Â
Freshmen duo Pheline Mining (9:13.57) and Addison Dorenkamp (9:14.84) opened the day of racing in the women's 3,000m, as the pair clocked the sixth-and-seventh-fastest times, respectively, in UA history while running in their track and field debut. Teammate Brenda Tuwei closed the Crimson Tide's women's distance showing, joining Lemngole in the women's 5,000m. Tuwei ran a PR (15:34.10) to shorten her fourth-place time in program history.
Men's distance trio Victor Kiprop, Dismus Lokira and Dennis Kipruto closed out the Tide's time in Boston, running in the 5,000m. Kiprop ran a PR (13:29.90) that shortened his own school record, as Lokira clocked the eighth-all-time-fastest UA time (13:52.29) in his track and field debut. Kipruto wrapped up the day by running the ninth-fastest time in program history (13:57.23).
Head Coach Dan Waters Said
"I can't think of a better way to start our indoor track and field season than with a NCAA record and a pair of school records. I thought the preparation of all seven of our runners, and assistant coaches Jordan Pingel and Nick Stenuf, was great today, especially after just completing their cross country seasons. I couldn't be prouder of Doris for breaking the collegiate record, and her school record, as well as Victor for shortening his school record. This is a great starting point that our program can build off of, and we look forward to resuming our season next month in Birmingham for the Harvey Glance Tide and Tigers Dual Meet against our in-state rival, Auburn."
