Roan Jones claimed the title in two sets to highlight the tournament and his advancement to the NCAA Singles Championships
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Alabama's Roan Jones claimed the ITA South Sectional Championships' singles title Sunday.
Jones faced Miami's Martin Katz, ranked 43rd nationally, in the championship match. Jones dropped just three games on his way to a 6-3 opening set victory. He would battle to a 6-6 tie in the second set, before rallying to take a 7-1 advantage in the tiebreaker and claim the match.
The victory capped an impressive run for the UA junior, who clinched a spot at the NCAA Singles Championships on Saturday with his advancement into the singles semifinal round.
Andrii Zimnokh also competed during the day, fighting in the quarterfinals playoff. Zimnokh recorded a win in the first set, taking a 6-4 advantage. He would fall, 6-2, 6-4, however, to Georgia's Oscar Pinto Sansano in the second and third set.
From Assistant Coach Ezequiel Gils
"We had a long and hot few days in Tallahassee, facing a lot of great competition. We put ourselves in favorable positions to keep advancing in the tournament in both singles and doubles but were unable to execute all the way through. There's still so much for us to improve before the spring which is the biggest takeaway from the tournament.
"Roan has been doing a great job this fall and the regional tournament was not an accurate reflection of that, so I'm very happy and proud of him for winning the Sectional and punching a ticket to the NCAA Individual Tournament."
