Alabama Opens Big12/SEC Challenge Friday

The Crimson Tide will have four student-athletes compete at the three-day tournament, hosted by Baylor
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis team will travel to Waco, Texas, this weekend to compete in the three-day Big 12/SEC Challenge. Baylor will host the event with doubles matches beginning at noon CT on Friday, followed by singles competition around 1 p.m.
Tournament Format
- Each day will begin with a round of doubles matches followed by all four competitors, from each school, competing in a singles battle

The Tournament
- The Crimson Tide will have four student-athletes compete in the three-day event as Matias Ponce De Leon takes the court for the first time this season
- Carlos Gimenez Perez, Roan Jones and Damien Nezar will be back in action after playing in UA's home tournament, the SEC Challenge
- In addition to Alabama, the Southeastern Conference will be represented by Texas, Florida, Auburn and Texas A&M
- The Big 12 will have athletes competing from host Baylor, Texas Tech, Arizona State, Oklahoma State and Arizona
About the Tide
- Three of the Crimson Tide's four competitors at this weekend's tournament have seen action this season, opening the year with a successful showing at the SEC Challenge
- Roan Jones went undefeated in the season opener, winning the Crimson Draw alongside partner Andrii Zimnokh
- The victory included three doubles and three singles wins as he faced SEC foes over the three-day event
- In addition to Jones, Damien Nezar holds a 3-0 start in singles action as he went undefeated at the SEC Challenge
- Competing as a doubles duo, Nezar and Carlos Gimenez Perez captured wins in two of three matches at the event
- Ponce De Leon returns to action after a strong 2023-24 season, which earned him Second Team All-SEC honors thanks to a team-leading 28 singles wins
- The tournament is the third of the season for Crimson Tide, who has seen competitors play at its home tournament, the SEC Challenge, and the ITA All-American Championships
