Former Alabama players make an impact in Week 2 of NFL season
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The National Football League concluded Week 2 of the regular season Monday evening. Below is a look at how former Alabama players fared on the gridiron last week.
Brian Robinson Jr. shined for the Commanders in a 35-33 win at Denver Sunday afternoon, rushing for 87 yards and two touchdowns on 18 attempts. Robinson Jr. added two receptions out of the backfield for 42 combined yards. Fellow running back Derrick Henry carried 25 times for 80 total yards and a touchdown in Tennessee's thrilling 27-24 overtime win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Henry led the Titans in rushing yards and attempts while also contributing three receptions for 15 yards.
Two former Alabama receivers excelled in primetime for their respective squads last week. DeVonta Smith caught four passes for a team-high 131 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown reception, to lift the Philadelphia Eagles to a 34-28 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday Night Football. Amari Cooper then had a big evening for the Browns on Monday Night Football. The veteran wideout led Cleveland with seven receptions and 90 yards.
On the defensive side, C.J. Mosley and Daron Payne continued their dominant play. Mosley tied the Jets' team-high mark for tackles with nine. The linebacker added one tackle for loss, a pass breakup and one quarterback hurry to lead New York's defensive unit. Payne totaled five solo tackles, including one sack and two tackles for loss, while adding three quarterback hurries and a pass breakup to lead the Commanders' defense.
Xavier McKinney shined in the Giants' 31-28 comeback win on the road over the Arizona Cardinals. McKinney totaled seven tackles, six of which were solo, and added one pass breakup to give New York their first win of the season. Rounding out the defensive group was Henry To'oTo'o of the Houston Texans. Making his first career start, the rookie totaled seven tackles by day's end.
