Enzo Aguiard Takes on the World University Games

Enzo Aguiard was selected to represent Australia at the Chengdu 2021 FISU Summer World University Games in Chengdu, China. Competition for the tennis tournament will begin Saturday, July 29 and will conclude Sunday, Aug. 6.
Day Seven- August 1, 2023
Three-Set Fight in DoublesÂ
Enzo Aguiard and Joshua Charlton faced Sergey Fomin and Maksim Shin from Uzbekistan in the second round of the doubles bracket. After a challenging first set that resulted in a 7-6(3) loss, the Australian duo flew through a 6-1 second set victory. The third-set tiebreaker sat tied at 6-6, but back-to-back points from the Uzbekistan pair would prove to be the difference as Australia lost 10-8.Â
Day Six- July 31, 2023
Battle in SinglesÂ
Despite a hard fought singles match, Enzo Aguiard suffered a loss to China's Hanyi Liu on Monday. In nearly an hour long opening set, Enzo found himself trailing 5-4 before the host country athlete captured the final game. Liu found momentum late in the second set to take the overall victory at 6-4, 6-2.Â
Day Five- July 30, 2023
Doubles ActionÂ
Enzo Aguiard and doubles partner Joshua Charlton defeated Sangheeth S Karunan Jayan and Oges Theyjo Jaya Prakash from India in the opening round of double action. After an evenly matched opening set was decided by a 7-4 tiebreaker, the Australian duo cruised to a 6-3 victory in round two to clinch the match. Following the competition, Enzo and Joshua signed autographs for fans before recovering from the win.Â

Day Four- July 29, 2023
First Round
Enzo Aguiard opens the tournament with a win over Tamerlan Azizov from Azerbaijan. Enzo took a 3-0 start before conceding a game. He finished the first set with a 6-1 score. After a two 2-1 start to set two, Enzo took the next three games before winning the match at 6-2.Â


Day Three- July 28, 2023
Opening Ceremony
The Games are officially underway as Enzo and the Australian National Team watched the celebration. The tennis tournament will begin on July 29.

Day Two- July 27, 2023
First Practice
Enzo and the Australian tennis team attempted to get a early morning practice in but had to pause due to rain and low availability. Instead, the team worked on hand-eye coordination and movement drills on some of the indoor basketball courts available, which provided the opportunity to watch some of the Taekwondo athletes practicing at the same time. Luckily, the team was able to practice inside for the afternoon, while also getting to take in the awe of the stadium and arena.Â


Day One - July 26, 2023
Travel DayÂ
After meeting some of his fellow Aussie crew at the airport, Enzo Aguard headed off to China. The trip was around 11 hours with the team arriving at 5:30 a.m. local time. They were greeted by a group of people who directed them where to go and helped take care of them as the traveled to the Village. Once there, they grabbed a bite to eat and tried out some of the virtual reality gaming systems.Â
