Jenny Mainz to Retire Following 2023 Season
After 26 seasons leading our women's tennis program, Jenny Mainz will be retiring following the 2023 season. As our longest-tenured head coach, Jenny has mentored countless student-athletes and represented The University of Alabama in a first-class manner. We are so proud of all she's accomplished on the court, and even prouder of the impact she's made on the lives of so many in our community and beyond.
SEC Champions
Congratulations to Coach Oats and our team for winning its second SEC Regular Season Championship in the last three years. With the overtime victory last Wednesday against Auburn, we also closed out the home season undefeated with a 15-0 record. This week, the team is off to the SEC Tournament, which is being held at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. As the top seed, we will play Friday, March 10 at Noon CT and take on the winner of the No. 9 Mississippi State vs. No. 8 Florida game.
Baseball Moves to 12-0
Our baseball team had another great week at The Joe, earning a win over Jacksonville State on Tuesday before sweeping UIC to move to 12-0 on the season. Combined, Coach Bohannon's squad scored 47 runs and recorded grand slams in four straight games for the first time in program history with one from Camden Hayslip, one from Tommy Seidl and two from Colby Shelton. Next up, we have our first road game of the season, playing at Samford on Tuesday, March 7 before welcoming Alabama State to town on Wednesday, March 8 and Columbia for a weekend series, beginning Friday, March 10. Tickets are available and can be purchased through the Alabama Ticket Office.
Softball Shuts Out Last Six Opponents
The bats were hot, but the pitching is the story of last week for our softball team as it recorded a shutout in all six games, beginning with a 5-0 victory over Southern Miss on Wednesday. From there, we took two against Robert Morris by scores of 4-0 and 10-0 (5 innings), where Jaala Torrence pitched a no-hitter, two from Longwood, winning 5-0 and 8-0 (6 innings) and the weekend finale against Mercer as Montana Fouts threw a perfect game in the 8-0 victory. The Tide will face Western Michigan at home on Tuesday, March 7 at 6 p.m. before hitting the road for a Wednesday, March 8 matchup with UAB and weekend series at Texas.
Rowing Sweeps Eastern Michigan
Congratulations to our rowing team for sweeping Eastern Michigan in our lone home race of the 2023 season. Mother Nature dialed up some great weather for our fans that morning, who enjoyed cheering on the Tide, and recognizing our senior class, under sunny skies. Next on the calendar is the Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, which takes place March 18-19.
Gymnastics Closes out Home Season with Boise State
Our gymnastics team returns to Coleman for its final home meet of the 2023 season on Friday, March 10, hosting Boise State. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. CT. In addition to celebrating our Seniors, it is Big Al's Birthday with giveaways and action stations throughout the concourse, including a face painter, a party hat decorating station and Big Al, himself, for photo opportunities.
NCAA Selection Shows
The NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Selection Shows are coming up on Sunday, March 12. Tune in to see where our teams end up, beginning with the men's field being announced at 5 p.m. CT on CBS. The women's show will follow at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN.
Track and Field Heads to New Mexico for NCAA Indoor Championships
Following a pair of top-four finishes at the SEC championships, our men's and women's indoor track and field teams are gearing up for the national stage at this week's NCAA championships. The meet is slated to take place Friday, March 10 – Saturday, March 11 at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico.
Built by Bama
Congratulations to our first two Built by Bama award winners of 2023 – Theo Bruinton, director of athletics facilities and operations, and Jadyn Spencer, softball operations coordinator. The Built by Bama Service Award recognizes staff members, who by their actions, words and deeds help to make The University of Alabama Department of Intercollegiate Athletics an exceptional place to work. Theo and Jadyn are two exceptional examples of this, and we are proud to recognize them!
University Spotlight
On Friday, March 10, the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame will induct eight new authors in a ceremony set to take place at Bryant Conference Center. Congratulations to the 2023 inductees!
